Genre: fashion
The
masthead of the magazine is always at the top and most times usually in the
centre, on the magazines shown above the masthead overlaps the photo as they
are quite unknown magazines and not widely popular so the masthead is visible
so people can read it, unlike magazines like vogue which are well known
everywhere so they can get away with the cover model overlapping the masthead.
The
magazines shown have very limited cover lines and no tag line which is quite
common with little well known magazines the limited cover lines relate to what
is inside such as another magazine lists “fashion worlds, creative spheres ,cultural
shifts’ which shows what is in the magazine in very limited form.
the
magazines are also not celebrity endorsed like popular magazines such as vogue.
The
colour schemes are either very bland with block colours of very mismatched this
give the audience an immediate insight of what kind of magazine it is and whit
king of fashion will be inside and if it appeals to them.
Double page spread

The
double page spreads always consist of a title not always at the top sometimes
in the centre or at the bottom, this title links with they fashion shown on the
page such as “black and white” lings with the page as the images are black and
white clothes and the text is about black and white fashion,
there
is always a scatter of images or a set f images in an orderly form that ling
with the text as the text is about the images of the clothes, most times the
images are photographs from fashion shoots but sometimes the designer original
sketches are used as the images.
The
back ground is usually white to make the clothes and such stand out from the
back ground.

Masthead fonts

these are fonts from a similar magazine to what I am designing , my ideas below are inspired by this magazines masthead.
Font style ideas
I told my friends about the task and what genre of magazine I am doing followed up by asking them which font they preferred and would make them want to buy the magazine, 90% of the people I asked said font 3 as it was simple , easy to read but also reflects the genre of magazine.

I chose the name unknown as te title of the magazine as at first I couldn't think of a name to suit the magazine so I just wrote unknows but then I thought that it looked and sounded quite nice and would personally look at this magazine if I saw it in a shop.

My magazine

these are my main ideas of what the cover and the double page spread are going to look like , though depending on what the photos look like the lay out may change depending on the photos I take.
I have placed the masthead at the top but overlapping the model as this will be an alternative magazine which are widely unknown so the masthead comes over the top of the cover model s people can clearly read it.
I chose to put no cover lines on till I have my photos so I can draw ideas for cover lines from the images, because cover lines that have no relation to the content are pointless.
I used the same font on the double page spread for the title for continuity.

I chose the image in the yellow skirt for the front cover as I wanted to have bright colours to catch the eye of potential readers but not the wrong colours so they get the wrong idea of that the magazine is about.

Photo shoot

I chose the image in the yellow skirt for the front cover as I wanted to have bright colours to catch the eye of potential readers but not the wrong colours so they get the wrong idea of that the magazine is about.

I have chosen this image as my cover image as it represents the magazine genre and it is very central with enough space above for a title at a reasonable size and space around the model for cover lines and such, i have tested out a few more images with the cover lay out to give variety of choice and show why i think this image is the best.
Front cover ideas
too busy and the font that says "on wednesdays we wear..." is hard to see as it is a lighter colour.
this idea is better as the back ground is more simple and there is more focus on the clothes but again the cover line "on Wednesdays we wear.." is hard to see because of the lighter black and white background
this idea is my personal favourite as the background is just right and the coverlines are clear and there is an advertisment on one side and a cover line on the other side of the model with balances it out nice and evenly .
i tried changing the colour on photo shop to see what it would look like as a different colour but i was not a fan of it so i changed back to yellow and decided what my final cover would
be.
Final choice for front cover

I chose this one as the yellow skirt stands out and that shows that its a fashion magazine as the clothes stand out. also having everything else black and white make the title stand out and the cover line, I chose the colour of the title to match what the model was wearing to make it look fluid and catch the eye of the target audience.
i tested the cover in different colours to see what suited and i tried it out with the £5 voucher advert and without the advert to see which would look best but the one without the advert looked empty and boring and i personally would not buy it .i included the £5 voucher as my audience is a C2B range and between the ages of 16-25 and with todays wages they would be looking to save money on things that they want to buy.
lots of magazines include these exclusive inside coverlines

the bar code was created with a font from Dafont which was 100% free.
double page spread
the images that I have chosen for the double page spread are not all yellow as the model did not have any more yellow clothes so I edited the clothes and surroundings to make them suit the aesthetic and the article would make sense

this lay out is very stereotypical and simple, easy for readers to read from left to right , there is an even bleed around the edge of this whole page

this lay out is very messy and confusing, having the title in the middle is not the best idea because when printed where it would be staples some of the letters might get messed up in the printing process and there isn't much of a bleed.

this lay out seems very crammed and it would be difficult to ling the images to the text, there is also no bleed on the page with the images and the voucher advertisement goes un noticed and its at a slant so people have to angel the magazine to read it which is an inconvenience as veiwers just want to read things straight forward.
Final double page spread layout
i designed this page to link with the cover by using yellow and black and also including the cover model image as the audience may see the item of clothing highlighted an like it and want to know more about it. i have used paint splatters and strokes to make the images look very urban and edgy. the paint splatters and lines look hand done so it gives it a personal feel to the page. also the original images were not wearing yellow clothes so i edited them yellow to fit to what the article is going to be about.
i included a voucher as i aim my magazine at a more middle working class target and they are the type of social class who are always looking to save money on things that they want.
Article ideas
my article is going to be informational and talk about the look in each picture and where the audience can purchase the item, I chose to do this kind of article because its a fashion magazine and if it were me reading it I would like no know a bit about the clothing in the images and where I can buy it myself , I am also going to include an advertisement that relates to the article .

Final double page spread.

i chose the lay out with the brush strokes under the text as personal i thought the double page looked empty without it.
the font i used for the article and the cover line on the front cover was Courier on photoshop.
i created the bar code on the voucher with the same text as what i created the bar code on the front cover which is called Another barcode , from Dafont.

front cover

double page spread
Front cover improvements
*add more coverless as it looks like a movie poster more than a magazine
*make the cover sicker smaller so there is more of a bleed*add a price

Double page spread improvements
*make sure yellow colour matches the same yellow on the front cover
*add more text as the font is too large and would look too large when printed on A4
*price of clothes could stand out
